I’M NOT A WOMAN

Ropes of rain create small streams
on the glass. I watch, leaning against
it. I try in vain to discern a sign that
will bring me closer to you, a trace
or a word. I’m not a woman; I’m not
a child.

Your message isn’t enough for me
anymore, nor are the flowers that
you often send me. Even your laugh,
which flies up into the air like a white
petal, isn’t enough; today, I feel like
a leaf mercilessly beaten by the rains.

A leaf resting in the wind’s arms
that slips to the ground or to the
grass, tired from the days of waiting,
failing to find its branch in the tree.

I am not a woman; I am not a child.

A GRAY SKY ON MY EYELASHES

A gray sky weighs on my eyelashes;
the long, monotonous road expands;
minutes seem hours and hours, days.

At the end of it, there is no one who
waits for me with open arms, who
pronounces my name in tones of
love. I feel anonymous and fragile
as the day wraps itself in darkness.

But now I see a star that incites me
to take it in my hands and hold it in
my fingers like an ephemeral firefly.

A gray sky weighs on my eyelashes.
The thought of you is enough for me,
and it lights me up just like that star;
the sky turns blue. Everything takes
on light; I lose track of space and
time; I can no longer tell where
your body ends and my spirit begins.
