A BOWING MAN

I bow to the woman
who raised me.

I bow to the house
I grew up in,
my friends, my companions,
and the school
that taught me
half of what I know,
the books that
took care of the rest.

I bow to the sports
I played,
the first girls
who smiled at me,
the scars I earned
doing the things
I dared to.

I bow so much
my hands touch the ground.
I look like an arc.
But I prefer to think
I’m a bridge.

LIVING TOGETHER

It doesn’t look like drama
because it happens on a daily basis,
but examine the evidence –
one man, one woman,
living in such proximity,
their breaths knock against each other,
their sweat converges.

The running conversation is mostly small talk.
But there’s always a subtext –
what are they doing here?
why are they together?

It happens in a house, not a stage.
Few of the scenes are particularly memorable.
And the acts, sometimes, can seem interminable.
But close company is conflict in human form.
And familiarity is another name for tension.
