long ago, the paseo
lamplit streets
tree with a heart
tongue of a poet
great things, little things,
a clatter of hoof against stone
a fragrance of rose, of lavender,
a gate soon closing on days
when we sat on stone pillows
where angels weep

What an amazing poem by Gary with such nostalgia in his words!! 💕
The page with Day’s End came up via WordPress’s Discover feature, so I decided to read it. I’m glad I did. I read it as an invitation to reflect on the delicate balance between memory and loss, nature and time, highlighting the value in both the grand and the small moments of life. This resonated with me as my job involves caring for the elderly on a busy hospital ward. Many of my patients teeter along those lines, some plunging, some not (for now). I felt the poem’s rich sensory imagery created an emotional landscape that echoed both longing for the past and reverence for the moments that shape us, again resonating with my experiences. I also appreciated the deft use of natural imagery and spiritual symbols to turn everyday experiences into reflections on the eternal. Gary fitted a great deal into a few words, which demonstrates his abilities as a poet.
