Bio:

Peter Mladinic’s most recent book of poems, The Whitestone Bridge, is available from Anxiety Press. An animal rights advocate, Peter lives in Hobbs, New Mexico.

Poems

Breadcrumbs

I am who I was the day I was born,
I am not who I was yesterday.
The same and not the same person,
I was told there was a blizzard outside.
There were breadcrumbs on a table,
a calendar on a wall, my mother’s arms.

In the hospital, after a stroke, unable
to speak, her face sagged to one side;
still, there was a trace of the figure
I walked away from taking my first steps.

A Pessimistic Goldfish

I want to be a pessimistic goldfish,
I want to be a clerk behind a counter
selling a minor a pack of Winston,
a Los Angeles Dodger on a bench,
a girl in a library reading about George
Washington chopping down the cherry tree,
thinking: I want to do it too!

In a loud Hawaiian shirt, on a wooded path,
confident nobody’s going to come out
and grab me, I want to be a foot
kicking sand in the face of the ninety-pound
weakling and the weakling.
I remember Point Reyes: wind, a precipice,
looking down at waves thrashing rocks.
