Bio:
Kelly Keener is a freelance proofreader and editor with a deep love for 19th-century literature. In her spare time, she writes poetry, transcribes obscure works for her blog, The Literary Maiden, and dedicates herself the recovery of forgotten voices. Her anthology, Tales, Sketches, Poems of Charles Fenno Hoffman, is her absolute pride and joy.
Byzantium
The resplendent warmth of ages past spilled upon the alabaster tile. Corinthian columns, fluted and weatherworn, nearly hugged their prodigious forms to the wall, the traces of uneven plaster creating an invisible thread towards an unprecedented immensity. Darkness greeted at the end of the seemingly infinite trail, the labyrinthian structure mutely insinuating a misleading nature. Nightshade, which had been lilting its drowsy head from within the cracks below, reawakened to experience the grandeur of the silvery, starry spray upon the marble edifice, exhaling a perfumed mist that intermingled with the nightly air. The aforementioned resplendent peace proceeded to plume, invisibly enwrapping the expanse with an illuminated, albeit smoky guise, reminiscent of those nocturnal melodies our nightly creatures whisper into the wind. Between two columns, a memory reclaimed the empty space, conceiving of itself. Eclipsing verdant cliffs clothed in ruinous debris; mosaics formed by the stars which pityingly wept over the ruin; the Aegean sea the only distant call of remembrance: Byzantium, once an imposing, ancient, suspended splendor, now a dim, vague glint of humanity passing through.
