Key Elements of Yosakoi

Naruko (Wooden Clappers): Dancers hold these traditional wooden clappers in both hands, shaking them to create a sharp rhythmic clicking sound. They were originally used by farmers to scare birds away from rice fields.
Music: Teams blend traditional local folk songs (like Kōchi’s “Yosakoi-bushi”) with modern genres like rock, pop, hip-hop, samba, or electronic music. Original Kōchi rules require every team’s song to incorporate a phrase from the classic “Yosakoi Naruko Dancing” track.
