Twisted for Life

At seventeen,
Amaya stole a kiss
in an abandoned,
stale basement—
vanilla, dark hair
around her neck.
Lemon on her lips—
sour and electric.

“Twisted” echoed,
like pickup lines,
fleeting into shadows.

I moved my lips,
words failed—
tongue flat,
nerves crossed,
palms sweating.

She bit her lip—
eyes sultry.

I didn’t turn to sulfur.
I saw through feigned desire.
From Mom’s lips to God’s ears—
I’d find grace,
tongues slipping,
faith dancing,
love’s mystery.

We kissed until goodbye.
I still kiss the thought of us.

I rinsed my face,
saw the reflection
she wanted—
smiled her smile.
I wasn’t as bad as Dad said.

After high school,
a college acceptance
letter took her down south.

Texts dwindled
daily, then only holidays.
She married.
I did too—
twenty years
love without us.
We split.

Thirty years later,
at our reunion—
vanilla scent,
hope I’d show.
She tucked her bangs.
I blushed.

“Twisted” spilled through
gym speakers.

She wrapped her arms
around my neck,
twisting me into liking
the air hunger
in my lungs.

Lust betrayed me,
God saved me from misery—
a second chance with Amaya
twisted for life.

One the Edge

If for nothing else—
Bree, me, fast car, careless.
Love—curves—Bree brakes.
