Behind the photography of a Japanese Artist – Naoki Kimura – The artist in his own words

I would like to share more about my attitude toward my work, or should I say, my conceptual approach, which is the fundamental thought behind the method and expression of my work.

My work is deeply connected to the spirit and philosophy of Zen. Zen places importance on the “here and now,” and photography is an art that captures that very moment. Zen and photography are often discussed together because of the shared emphasis on mindfulness and the present moment. Zen teaches that by being fully present and aware, one can achieve a state of calm and clarity. This mindset can be applied to photography, where being in the moment and fully engaged with your surroundings can lead to capturing more meaningful and impactful images.

The act of capturing a fleeting scene or emotion resonates with the spirit of concentrating on the present that Zen teaches. Zen seeks “無心－Mushin- (no mind)”. No-mind is the elimination of excess thoughts and emotions and the attainment of a state of pure consciousness. When taking a photograph, if a photographer can face a subject in a state of no mind, he or she can capture a purer and truer moment.

I focus on casual moments and landscapes, aiming to capture the essence and silence hidden therein. By eliminating unnecessary elements and exploring the richness hidden in simplicity, I express the spirituality and the momentary beauty that lie deep within the material surface. This minimalism-wise style of expression is deeply rooted in the teachings of Zen.

Finding and photographing the beauty hidden in the subtle patterns of nature and the hustle and bustle of the city embodies the Zen spirit of “awareness.”

For me, photography is not just a visual record, but a way to embody inner insight. I pursue the state of “無為自然－Mui Shizen”(unconditioned nature; abandoning artifice and just being oneself.)

In my work I capture the transience of a moment, “mono no aware”. This process is a journey of finding my own inner tranquility and balance.

I hope that my work will help viewers to face their own inner selves and rediscover the beauty and tranquility in the everyday life. My minimalism of the monochrome approach aims to bring out “truth in simplicity” in a complex world and bring deep emotions and insights to the viewer.
