Pandora’s Defense

I cursed the universe.
That’s the version you tell.
I didn’t listen when warned.
But I read the warning;
You didn’t.

“Open this box and you will see
The poetics of absurdity.”

For you I unlocked
Literature, Music, and Poetry,
Riddles and the laughter they spawn,
Even Science, to fuel invention.

You want to find wisdom?
You’ll have to wander through Wonderland.
Only Mad Hatters become mystics.
Forget staying orthodox; Reality’s a paradox.

When you can define the dove
Without defining the serpent,
When you can discover aloe
Without discovering hemlock,
When you can destroy the arrowhead
Without destroying the statue,

Then you will not need my gift.

I released hope,

For light found life in darkness,

And joy is agony’s twin.

Mórrígan’s Tree

Through burls and cracks of lightning’s make
A warrior woman’s face looks out
From the weathered oak tree by the lake.

Her and torso clear, make no mistake,
Her knowing eyes will find each secret out
Through burls and cracks of lightning’s make.

Her hallow trunk no weakness makes;
Her skin is thick, her roots are stout,
This weathered oak tree by the lake.

In rising winds her leafy tent may shake.
Her solid shield and spear hold still throughout
In burls and cracks of lightning’s make.

Squirrels, cardinals, worried humans, too, she’ll take
And guard them fiercely ‘round about
Her weathered oak tree by the lake.

Whatever strikes the world could make,
She’s seen and will see the worst ones out
Though burls and cracks the lightning makes
In this resilient oak tree by the lake.
