TWO EXCELLENT POEMS BY JUSTIN MARLOWE

BIO

Justin Marlowe is a rising author who currently lives in Fredericksburg, Virginia. After embarking on a career as a writer, he’s been fortunate enough to have his memoir, “Perfect Strangers: Echoes of a Black Suburban Youth,” published, as well as five of his poems; one within the World Poetry Collective’s, “Poets of a New Generation” compilation, two within the BIPOC centered Literary magazine, “Alma Lit,” and finally two with the UK’s, “The Lost Letter Project.” He continues to make strides with the recent completion of a black sci-fi novella and a few other fictional projects. He is extremely proud of each of his literary endeavors, as each piece serves a purpose in its unique manner concerning its stylistic approach. While building a solid portfolio of published work is never easy in such a competitive industry, Justin is on a fast track toward success. In addition to his work as an author, he has been successfully delving into the world of podcasting, which has aided in his process toward detailed artistic branding.

Paradox of the Ocean Current

An abnormality draped behind a veil of pristine elegance.
The moon was an integral participant.
Off-kilter beauty wrapped inside an immaculate seashell.
The primary term, “looking.” A delightful outer core.
A peculiar being cloaked within ornate colors and exquisite earthly design.
An enigma lacking candor, and therefore, tears ensued.
Not necessarily from the subject, but from loved ones.
The paradox of the ocean current, as the shell rocked back and forth.
I can’t do without, but I must. I can’t, but can I?…what is necessary for my own fulfillment?
Hesitancy persisted with regularity.
Virtue and dread were withheld, enclosed by a mirage.
The paradox of the ocean current, as the shell rocked back and forth.
A facade, yes, but one which had been determined beneficial by the narrator.
A fruitful contradiction, maybe?
Eventually, gone too soon, without answers; lost amongst the abyss of the sea.
Hopefully located and placed within an affectionate home;…hopefully.
Increased candor still warranted unfulfillment, and while it persisted, tears ensued.
The paradox of the ocean current, as the shell rocked back and forth.

The Playground

Every 24 hours
Blood trickled onto the wood chips
Burnt, charred, and in need of an overhaul
But the blood remained
The playground was riddled in proverbial gore
Spilling over the grass, dousing the slides, and enveloping the monkey bars
The excessive slickness was felt by all
It wasn’t a hemorrhage in the literal sense
Not in the least
The discharge spewed from an emotive source
Ejecting from the hearts and minds of the youngins
So fresh, it should have been blue
Something intrinsic, omitting from repetitive experience
Words can be chilling
Their delivery can carry detailed potency
Occasionally encouraging, but universally destructive
Must one react? I can’t fathom the consequences
You’re in the minority
Just go on about the day
Nothing happened, except that it did
And it was inescapable on a daily basis
Every 24 hours.

  1. I love how the rhythm and repetition in Paradox of the Ocean Current so fully capture the feeling of listening to the ocean. It’s not just in the back and forth of contrasting questions and repeating lines, though of course that’s part of it, but the cadence of the words themselves also feels similar to the sound of waves on sand. Very immersive reading experience.
