Flash fiction by Nicholas Viglietti

Bio

Nicholas Viglietti is a writer from Sacramento, CA. Katrina ripped the gulf coast up, and he rebuilt homes there, for 2 years. Up in Mon-tucky, he cut trails in the wilderness. He pedaled from Sac-town to S.D. He’s a seventh-life party-hack, attempting to rip chill lines in the madness.

Dry Squeaks of Neglected Souls

His ugly mug hung loose and low for a guy that should not be wastin’ his time with a face the pushes people further away. Especially, here, under this beaming desert sun; stuck in our inescapable dead-end of a back-breakin’ grind’s rut.

From those blank and desperate eyes; the indication of the end of strained wits, and witherin’ soul, rapidly losin’ grit – shit bummed me out; although, I couldn’t help but notice this might be a real issue on the bro’s mind, because he didn’t display a burst of admiration for my hogg-it-out, lumber-huck ability.

I thought, damn, hold-up, did you catch that 6×620-foot log; I just tossed like a baseball bat I used to smash a homer straight buff-migo style; rippin’ more wear on the aches in these boulder shoulders.

I asked, “what’s the deal dude; where’s the mettle in your heart – that shit’s critical to get through daunting days, heavy workloads, and dismal prospects – you gotta be bigger than these dungeons of commerce on the on human-spirit?”

He looked glum like a future sip of water couldn’t even provide the comfort those desperate eyes; lost, frozen in to the abyss of nothing visual but the detailed failure in his a losin’ man’s own mind.

I could tell: he had a long way to go before the hole would even get dug.

The silence got weird, and then he asked, “how do you handle it, dude?” his lips stiffly uttered, “ya know, the pointless pressure on our skulls, you can’t evade, and will inevitably crush us all?”

Damn…that’s a question that needs to be answered delicately, or a man may walk out of the facility, and wind up with a single-shot head wound, out in the desert.

Felt weird, gettin’ stumped by the flappin’ lip acceleration of my live-wire breed…I gave the thoughts a hard ponder…and, I knew it wouldn’t be much but it seemed to get me through these days that would shatter my will to rise again tomorrow.

I took a breath, and flipped my hat back – show the slim thread and dangin’ bastard that I meant business – and said, “Just stay loose and live wild in the wash of rare smiles…I bust my ass to enjoy it from a reclined view – usually, barefooted and kicked back – with beer bottles, and zyn-tussis, not too far out of reach – preferably, poolside, but any patio-bar will do just fine…a place where my bald head can breathe & unwind…where the bounce of big-booties, and the pernicious blaze of my crazed urges compel me to reduce the pressures of this life, down to a devour-able ounce.”
