BIO

Shinsei is a Tokyo-based poet deeply inspired by Stoic philosophy and Bushido. His poetry
explores the human condition with clarity and quiet force, often engaging themes of
mortality, dignity, and the meaning of life. His work aims to offer a blade of stillness in an
increasingly mechanized world.

Poem 1 — Meaning (English)

You ask me, what is the meaning of life?
I say, meaning is something to be found.
You ask again: And then? What’s the point?
We all die. Earth will vanish someday too.
So I reflect:
Each day, a quiet rehearsal for death.
And with it, the shaping of a poem yet to come.
One day, may we color the world with meaning

Original Japanese

人生の意味は何だと君は問う
意味は見つけるものだよと僕は言う
見つけてどうするんだ？そこに何かあるのか？
全員いつか死んで地球も無くなる日が来るのにか？ と やはり云う
思うに日々は死への準備 将来（さき）の詩の準備をしつつ ただ思う
いつかこの世に意味よ色付け

Poem 2 — Machines and the Katana (English)

Machines invade the world.
Humans turned machine, laugh while weep-laughing—
those they once scorned, belittled.
A new world nears.
Feeling and reason lost, extinction looms.
One slash halts the tide:
Dignity.
The katana of the heart.

機械が世界を侵略す
機械になった人間ども 笑いながら泣き笑う 蔑んでいた 軽んじた
世界は間も無くやってくる
感想知性も失って 絶滅目見え
遮る一閃 品位なり
人たらしめる唯一の刀

Tracks of Time

Coffee beans 
unlock 
secret corridors!

They carry condensed histories
and
journeys, old and new, unveiled
in the present instant, unbidden
fragments, dusted off, souvenirs
dipped in the language of dreams

Aroma drifts
over 
the November fog, enters
a Brampton-basement stealthily,

tickles
the nostrils of the
occupant, half-asleep, muttering
things in Tamil.

A palm-fringed house
surfaces 
from the murky depths
of 
memory where time
resides in liquid form,

a fishing village of
red-tiles, spires and a 
colonial fort in disrepair
float up, dimmed by the rains,

the beach with the palm trees
and an upturned boat, beside
the beer shack, on the very edge
of a pearly sea, once haunted
by 
the ghosts of empire, and,

the clock alarm goes off
in shrill notes, the land recedes, you
wake up in another timeline.

Recall

The crystals drop
from the heavens
in big drops, they
dribble down the
misted window-panes
in a rented house
of
an immigrant family, in a suburb
of Ontario, a family with big dreams.

Drops! These connect with another
lost moment, elsewhere, drift off
the sea in tide, the
tiny drops
on the forehead
of the old Ma, wiped with veined
hands, in a dark kitchen, busy with the masalas,
as the family waits, on a humid Mumbai morning
for the brunch; simultaneity of time-space
packed
in the tiny drops of rain.

Bio

S.N. Walker is a poet from Hendersonville, NC, crafting visceral explorations of survival, identity, memory, and dissociation. She is currently completing her debut collection, Soular System: Poems to We from Me, which interrogates the fractured galaxy of her late-diagnosed Dissociative Identity Disorder, with each planet as an alter. These submitted poems—one a scream into the void, the other an interrogation of traumatic memory—exemplify her signature style: words served hot. All of Walker’s poems are driven by her process: every word is written and edited within 48 hours—before she forgets the feeling.

Security questions make me nervous

What’s the name of your first childhood pet?
You mean the one
we had to give away to another home?
I hid from her gnashing teeth under the bed.

What’s your childhood best friend’s name?
You mean the one
whose father who beat his child to a pulp?
We’re not friends anymore.

What is the name of the street you grew up on?
You mean the one
that got foreclosed on, when I was 16?
I got my first job on my birthday that year.

What was the name of your 8th grade math teacher?
You mean the one
who devised a word problem using my absences?
She told me I was wasted potential.

What was the make and model of your first car?
You mean the one
my friend’s dad sold me for $6k?
I didn’t know the frame was bent.

Where did you meet your spouse?

You mean the one
who put me in the hospital twice with his words?
I’d rather not say.

Security questions make me nervous.
Not because I don’t know the answers,
Because I don’t want to remember them

I’ve fallen into a black hole—again

I don’t struggle to escape this time—
weightlessly—soundlessly—fruitlessly.

No one can hear my primal howls
in the space between my system’s planets.
I can’t help but be afraid of absolute void.

Who am I? Where am I? In what time?
My mind is tv static, buzzing—no signal.
What can I do? Scream—until I can hear me.
