NAOKI KIMURA, A PHOTO, A POEM BY GABRIELA MARIE MILTON, AND A YOUTUBE VIDEO

In a somewhat paradoxical manner, my involvement in Renaissance-era background and symbolism during my student days could be seen as a journey to discover the essence of my own “photographic works.” It wasn’t a matter of having a specific trigger or connection to Western culture or European art since I was born and raised in Japan. Instead, it was more like a childhood sense of aesthetics that drew me towards Renaissance paintings.

To put it somewhat boldly, it felt like memories from a past life. My father was stationed in Europe and the United States since when I was born, so even while in Japan, I had easy access to Western culture. There were art catalogs from renowned museums around the world at home, and I distinctly remember leisurely flipping through them. Undoubtedly, such experiences had some influence on me. As I delved deeper into art history, I encountered the field of “Iconology,” and it led me to perceive a paradox between my artistic style at the time and my background. Iconology seeks to decode the impressions and meanings inherent in artworks and images, and it is a crucial factor not only in art but also in the realm of “photography.” Photographers believe that they can convey meaning and emotions through composition and the arrangement of elements. Moreover, Renaissance paintings and sculptures often depict religious themes and narratives and studying them could provide insights into the messages and stories within those works.

NAOKI KIMURA

My dear followers.

As you may know Literary Revelations is thrilled to release in July, an excellent art album by Japanese fine-art photographer Naoki Kimura.

The above quote is an excerpt from an interview in which the artist talks about his first art album on Renaissance. I hope you enjoy it and learn more about the artist.

Below is a photograph by Naoki Kimura and a poem written by me.

Poem by Gabriela Marie Milton

Between above and below,
The gates opened— silently, unannounced, as the breath of a sacred day.

I believe it was afternoon:
a hush of light,
The world’s pulse slowed

I saw them by the gates, their shadows
gliding toward each other
like the hands of a clock
reaching for reunion.

By morning, they were gone
But the shadows lingered—
long, deliberate,
etching questions into the stone,

each one a silent syllable
in a language of thresholds.
I continue to take the stairs,
each step a small devotion,
and to pray—
not for answers,
But for the grace of passing
between what is above
And what is below,
When the gates open
without a word,
and fall
is the only reply.

Featuring Down Pisturino poetry and some notes on her latest book

Author Biography

Dawn Pisturino is a retired registered nurse in Arizona whose international publishing credits include poems, short stories, and articles. She has published five poetry collections, including her most recent release, Ancient Voices: Poems About Ancient Egypt, which achieved #1 Amazon New Release status in African Poetry and History of Egypt. She is a member of Mystery Writers of America and the Arizona Authors Association.

Poetry

Harmony

raw harmony
splits the skies
like lightning
the music of the spheres

Silent

I see you
But I can’t hear you
In the darkness.
Your lips move
But no words spill out.
My heart is silent
And can’t respond.

Nobody’s Blameless

I was born in the aftermath of World War II,
Korea, and the First Indochina War.
Vietnam rumbled and then erupted
Into full-blown conflict.
Cuba fell in a wave of violence
And self-righteous pomposity,
Threatening higher powers.
Krushchev promised nuclear holocaust
Against the West,
Solidifying the icy wall of the Cold War.
Berlin split into opposing ideologies,
Divided by concrete barriers.
College campuses amplified the noise,
Demanding peace that never existed.
Demanding justice and humanity
That never existed.
Demanding a better world
That never existed.
Peace, Love, Humanity, Justice, Equality.
Beautiful words that paint lovely pictures
Of a world that never existed.
Nobody’s blameless in this world
Of chaos, unhappiness, and poverty of spirit.
We all created it.
We all project our anxieties, doubts, and fears
Onto the world canvas.
We are the painters of this ugly mural.

Ancient Voices: Poems About Ancient Egypt by Dawn Pisturino

Post for Literary Revelations Journal

On May 1, 2025, Dawn Pisturino released her fifth poetry collection, Ancient Voices: Poems About Ancient Egypt, on Amazon. The book achieved #1 Amazon New Release status in African Poetry and History of Egypt on pre-order. Following its release, the collection regained #1 Amazon New Release status in African Poetry and has consistently performed well, particularly in the categories of History of North Africa and History of Egypt.

Why Ancient Egypt?

The author did not plan to write a book about Ancient Egypt. She had written a poem retelling an Ancient Egyptian folktale about Isis and Ra for a poetry anthology, but it was rejected. Not knowing what to do with the poem, she decided to write a book of poetry about Ancient Egypt.

Dedication

“These original poems were inspired by my deep love and fascination for the rich history, culture, and spirituality of Ancient Egypt. If you love this ancient civilization as much as I do, these poems are dedicated to you. Dawn Pisturino”

Amazon Blurb

“The Ancient Egyptians loved life and celebrated it with joy. Their deepest desire was to live an honorable life and achieve immortality in the afterlife, where they could exist in perfect harmony with the cosmic order and never experience pain, suffering, and hardship again. These original poems by Dawn Pisturino reflect the hopes and dreams of people who were not much different from us. They worked, loved, raised families, worshipped their gods, honored the dead, enjoyed festivals and celebrations, imbibed beer and wine, danced, sang, and played, aspired to better themselves, and appreciated the beauty and wonder of nature. Take a journey back in time to explore the minds and hearts of the Ancient Egyptians.”

A Poem from the Book

The Lover’s Lament – A Ghazal

Why are the desert winds scented with your perfume?
Why do Nut’s stars spell out your name?

My heart sings the praises of your beauty, crying in the night
When your father takes you up the Nile to Memphis.

Come back to me, lover, and leave me no more!
When I call your name, come back!

Why does the moon disappear from the sky?
Why does the sun shine dully on the sand?

My heart yearns to touch you in the soft moonlight.
My heart longs to dally in the bright sunlight.

Come back to me, lover, and leave me no more!
When I call your name, come back!

Why do your eyes attract me so?
Why do your lips invite me to a kiss?

My hands explore the contours of your form,
And I want to lie with you in the coolness of the night.

Come back to me, lover, and leave me no more!
When I call your name, come back!

A Poem by Vasiliki Petroudi

BIO

Vasiliki Petroudi is a poet from Athens, Greece. Her poems appear on the poetry collections “Instant Eternal” Vol 4 and Vol 6,” Wounds I healed, Poetry of Strong Women “,” Tranquility: An Anthology of Haiku “(both collections published by Gabriela Marie Milton),” Glitter of Miles “,” Winter of the Raven” Vol 1 and 2 (published by Poe Girl Publishing) and in the literature magazines SpillWords and Setu magazine.

Death around me

Everywhere around me
dead people
Armies of dead people
even children are dead
even newborns
come out to the light
-a light weak and pale without any warmth-
are born by dead wombs
they suckle dead breasts
milk enriched with
deadly sleep
I am terrified
I am searching for an alive sight
I am horrified
I live among the deads
My nostrils are burning
by the heavy odour of ptomaine
Carcasses are marching
they talk to me
they touch me with dead hands
they look at me with empty eyes
Everyone died
My people
My friends
Those I knew
and the unknown ones
When?
When did the world die?
Where was I
when the world was dying?
Did I kill the world inside me?
Maybe I see the world
through my dead eyes…

Flash fiction by Gwendaline Higgins

Bio

Gwendaline Higgins is a French-Australian writer who lives and writes in two languages. Her fiction has been shortlisted for the Francophone Young Writers Prize. ‘I Carried You’ was a runner-up of the inaugural Not Quite Write Prize for Flash Fiction.

I Carried You

You don’t know what it means, but I carried you.

In the hopeful days and nights, the looking-forward weeks, the in-between time that stretched to over yonder, and stretched and stretched, until you.

#

I carried you, those sleepless nights, with the perfect weld of your too-new body outside against mine, through the fog-stunned times—the wistful times of sing-song whispers and that new knot longingly under my ribs, filling to breathlessness the place where I made you. Oh, how I carried you.

I carried you, the heedless days. Out of trees and friends’ houses, up and out from tangles of bushes, bedclothes and fears, hauling the precarious roar and crash of your emotions, your sleepy abandon over expanses of country, bustling streets and dim-lit evenings. If you knew, the way the weight of you turned heavier in my arms and firmer on my hip, all the ways you became livelier over my shoulders and impatient off my lap.

I witnessed you. I caught the moments, the seconds that fleetingly mattered and that you could not see, catching them like the things that slid oblivious from your hands. I held the memories that would not hold and I carried them too, I carried the mounting cargo of the memories of you as you walked and ran and wondered.

As you walked and ran and wondered ahead.

#

You carried me.

You carried me to the resting place, went along with those absurd rites they do.

You keep on carrying me, a sometimes-there weight in the stride of your legs, in your eyes that see the world and imagine much more, in your heart that I made. Until the looking-forward weeks have ended like a cliff, and you tumble into what it meant.

You know it now, don’t you?

In the all-encompassing weld of the too-new body against yours, in the sudden narrowing of the world, in the heftier shadow of me in your world that goes on—the wondrous wisdom of how much you were loved.

I have been waiting for you to know it.

How longingly and forever-and-ever-after, how beyond-the-words it is that you were loved.

Oh, how, how I loved you.

#

They carry you to the resting place. They carry you carrying me. (Those rites are absurd, aren’t they?) How weightless I am these days.

How tempting is the earth: the wondrous, wistful abandon of it. The earth upon which I, once, carried you… How tempting the driftings of the lines—

On the other side, will it be forgotten—just how much I loved you?

The Monochrome Muse of Naoki Kimura – Cherry Blossoms and Shadows: My First Photography Experience

The catalyst for my journey into photography began shortly after I entered my first year of high school (in Japan, the school year starts in April, not September). It was a time when cherry blossoms had fallen, making way for fresh greenery. I was  strolling through the city when I happened to notice a sign for a group photo exhibition.

My memory of the event is somewhat vague, but I believe it was a small gallery located on the second floor of a building. It was indeed a group photography exhibition, and what stood out most in my memory was that nearly all the works were monochrome. As it was my first experience attending a gallery exhibition, I remember nervously stepping into the entrance. The space was minimalistic, with three white walls forming a simple rectangular studio-like area. There were around 30 photographs displayed in a single row, ranging in size might be from 8×10 to about 11×14 inches. Unfortunately, I can’t recall all the works now, but one image caught my attention. It was a scene of an old-style red (should be) Japanese mailbox, set against a strong yet graceful evening sunbeam casting its shadow. It was a breathtaking moment, and that image captured my heart.  I don’t remember the artist’s name or the title of the piece. Furthermore, I’m not entirely sure why it left such an impression on me, but I believe it was the power of expression through “photography” itself that resonated with me.

There was an atmosphere that seemed to convey something profound, even though it was just an ordinary mailbox. While I was writing my name in the guestbook, I absentmindedly glanced around the exhibition space and realized something remarkable. There were about ten or so attendees, and I hadn’t heard a single conversation among them. It was silent, and then it dawned on me—they were all communicating in sign language. It was at that moment that I realized the exhibition was showcasing the works of “deaf, hearing-impaired”

I’M NOT A WOMAN

Ropes of rain create small streams
on the glass. I watch, leaning against
it. I try in vain to discern a sign that
will bring me closer to you, a trace
or a word. I’m not a woman; I’m not
a child.

Your message isn’t enough for me
anymore, nor are the flowers that
you often send me. Even your laugh,
which flies up into the air like a white
petal, isn’t enough; today, I feel like
a leaf mercilessly beaten by the rains.

A leaf resting in the wind’s arms
that slips to the ground or to the
grass, tired from the days of waiting,
failing to find its branch in the tree.

I am not a woman; I am not a child.

A GRAY SKY ON MY EYELASHES

A gray sky weighs on my eyelashes;
the long, monotonous road expands;
minutes seem hours and hours, days.

At the end of it, there is no one who
waits for me with open arms, who
pronounces my name in tones of
love. I feel anonymous and fragile
as the day wraps itself in darkness.

But now I see a star that incites me
to take it in my hands and hold it in
my fingers like an ephemeral firefly.

A gray sky weighs on my eyelashes.
The thought of you is enough for me,
and it lights me up just like that star;
the sky turns blue. Everything takes
on light; I lose track of space and
time; I can no longer tell where
your body ends and my spirit begins.

In August Literary Revelations is set to unveil a stunning album of fine-art photography by the acclaimed Japanese artist Naoki Kimura

While photography inherently gives the impression of being “real” or “existing in reality,” the essence of monochrome photography lies in creating scenes that do not actually exist. Through this abstraction, the universal characteristics and emotions of the subject are emphasized, bringing out a deeper sense of reality. If color photography can evoke individual emotions and meanings as realism, monochrome photography can be said to enable a universal empathy not influenced by color

Naoki Kimura

Noaki Kimura explored the Renaissance period and produced fantastic work. He paid homage to the beauty of other worlds. Now, he is returning to his Japanese roots to ask the world, “Will you do the same for the beauty of my country?”

Pandora’s Defense

I cursed the universe.
That’s the version you tell.
I didn’t listen when warned.
But I read the warning;
You didn’t.

“Open this box and you will see
The poetics of absurdity.”

For you I unlocked
Literature, Music, and Poetry,
Riddles and the laughter they spawn,
Even Science, to fuel invention.

You want to find wisdom?
You’ll have to wander through Wonderland.
Only Mad Hatters become mystics.
Forget staying orthodox; Reality’s a paradox.

When you can define the dove
Without defining the serpent,
When you can discover aloe
Without discovering hemlock,
When you can destroy the arrowhead
Without destroying the statue,

Then you will not need my gift.

I released hope,

For light found life in darkness,

And joy is agony’s twin.

Mórrígan’s Tree

Through burls and cracks of lightning’s make
A warrior woman’s face looks out
From the weathered oak tree by the lake.

Her and torso clear, make no mistake,
Her knowing eyes will find each secret out
Through burls and cracks of lightning’s make.

Her hallow trunk no weakness makes;
Her skin is thick, her roots are stout,
This weathered oak tree by the lake.

In rising winds her leafy tent may shake.
Her solid shield and spear hold still throughout
In burls and cracks of lightning’s make.

Squirrels, cardinals, worried humans, too, she’ll take
And guard them fiercely ‘round about
Her weathered oak tree by the lake.

Whatever strikes the world could make,
She’s seen and will see the worst ones out
Though burls and cracks the lightning makes
In this resilient oak tree by the lake.
