The Art of an Exceptional Japanese Photographer – Naoki Kimura Solo Exhibition, Kyoto, 2024

Literary Revelations is thrilled to bring you again the exceptional art of Naoki Kimura.

Naoki Kimura’s black and white photography is a captivating exploration of the interplay between light, shadow, and the essence of his subjects. Deeply influenced by the principles of Zen, Kimura’s work transcends the boundaries of mere technical prowess, delving into the realm of emotional resonance and spiritual contemplation.

Each frame composed by Kimura is a testament to his keen eye and profound understanding of the world around him. His mastery of the medium allows him to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, revealing the hidden beauty and profound truths that often elude the casual observer.

Whether capturing the weathered textures of an ancient structure or the graceful movement of a solitary figure, Kimura’s photographs possess a mesmerizing quality that invites the viewer to pause, reflect, and engage with the deeper layers of meaning. His work is not merely a representation of the physical world, but a window into the artist’s own contemplative journey, inviting the audience to embark on a similar path of self-discovery.

Naoki Kimura is an exceptional award winning Japanese photographer. You can read more about him here.

Behind the photography of a Japanese Artist – Naoki Kimura – The artist in his own words

I would like to share more about my attitude toward my work, or should I say, my conceptual approach, which is the fundamental thought behind the method and expression of my work.

My work is deeply connected to the spirit and philosophy of Zen. Zen places importance on the “here and now,” and photography is an art that captures that very moment. Zen and photography are often discussed together because of the shared emphasis on mindfulness and the present moment. Zen teaches that by being fully present and aware, one can achieve a state of calm and clarity. This mindset can be applied to photography, where being in the moment and fully engaged with your surroundings can lead to capturing more meaningful and impactful images.

The act of capturing a fleeting scene or emotion resonates with the spirit of concentrating on the present that Zen teaches. Zen seeks “無心-Mushin- (no mind)”. No-mind is the elimination of excess thoughts and emotions and the attainment of a state of pure consciousness. When taking a photograph, if a photographer can face a subject in a state of no mind, he or she can capture a purer and truer moment.

I focus on casual moments and landscapes, aiming to capture the essence and silence hidden therein. By eliminating unnecessary elements and exploring the richness hidden in simplicity, I express the spirituality and the momentary beauty that lie deep within the material surface. This minimalism-wise style of expression is deeply rooted in the teachings of Zen.

Finding and photographing the beauty hidden in the subtle patterns of nature and the hustle and bustle of the city embodies the Zen spirit of “awareness.”

For me, photography is not just a visual record, but a way to embody inner insight. I pursue the state of “無為自然-Mui Shizen”(unconditioned nature; abandoning artifice and just being oneself.)

In my work I capture the transience of a moment, “mono no aware”. This process is a journey of finding my own inner tranquility and balance.

I hope that my work will help viewers to face their own inner selves and rediscover the beauty and tranquility in the everyday life. My minimalism of the monochrome approach aims to bring out “truth in simplicity” in a complex world and bring deep emotions and insights to the viewer.

Zen seeks “無心-Mushin- (no mind)”. No-mind is the elimination of excess thoughts and emotions and the attainment of a state of pure consciousness. When taking a photograph, I believe that if a photographer can face a subject in a state of no mind, he or she can capture a purer and truer moment.

Expressing the principles of Zen through photography goes beyond mere artistic expression. It is an act of pursuing inner tranquility and deep insight into oneself.

Praise on Vasile Trif’s work:

André Seleanu – art critic:

“Vasile Trif’s art has an astonishing internal diversity, I’d say an unusual complexity. The shadowy zones that join the darkness of all dangers open onto the light. Intense colors – brick reds, ultramarine blues, eye-catching yellows – are balanced by unexpectedly articulated white spaces. There’s something palimpsestic about this work of the image inscribed in the image.

Interferences: the titles of some of the works already suggest an abstract domain. But there are also bird shapes and fragments of figurative scenes: our expectations are rather thwarted as the work unfolds. Calligraphy and decorative motifs abound. Surprise: there’s a sensuality of color and a diversity of sources of inspiration, not least the icon on glass with its specific atmosphere, which Trif has mastered. I also note the interplay of articulations and boundaries between open and partitioned space. In short, an abstract work that often brandishes the smiling exterior of figuration.

In his vision, the artist builds a bridge between the visible and invisible worlds. Ochres, earth tones blues allude to the world and atmosphere of Transylvanian ceramic culture (pots and jugs). Thematically, he draws on his poems and his imagination, imbued with mythical signs and motifs.

The Agora becomes a place of inner centering, a space of identity. For The Agora to fulfill its purpose, it must always be clean, free of uselessness, ready to receive. Trif believes that such is the work of art: An Agora. The artist explains: “In my artistic work, I have adopted signs and symbolic elements from Byzantine painting and glass images, and I have transposed and reinterpreted them on paper as support in an abstract expressionism with figurative elements.”

Sheila Horne Mason – journalist :

Vasile Trif, Jr. is a multi-faceted, modern-day Renaissance man who was born in Transylvania, and is now based in Canada. Trif grew up in his artist father’s studio, and he was very influenced by his father’s work. Vasile has degrees in theology, philosophy, and social work, and he is an ordained minister in the Romanian Orthodox Church. Vasile is a mixed-media artist who works in watercolors and lithographs on paper and canvas. He sometimes takes puzzle pieces of his own art and reassembles them into entirely new collages. Trif has a strong spiritual element in his art. He said his personal challenge as an artist is to draw on the rich tradition of symbols and icons of orthodoxy, while reinterpreting them to create a contemporary twist. He aims for a synthesis between divine and human knowledge, and through a symphony of colors, he endeavors to represent the invisibility of the spiritual realm. Vasile noted that one of the great figures of modern art, Wassily Kandinsky, was much inspired by music, and he is as well. In his studio, Reverend Trif listens to music, including jazz and Byzantine choral music as inspiration for his art pieces.

When asked how he knows when a piece is finished, he said. “I have a feeling…If you put more and more, you can destroy the creation. So, I’m trusting my feeling. I know when I’m painting…’ You got it, it’s complete.” In addition to all his other endeavors, Vasile is a poet, and his poetry also encourages him in his creation of his outstanding art.

From Full Moon Confessions by Tracey Anne – Summer Rain

Come and find me

walking on the luscious greens

It seems

the drought chapped

and blistered ground

thrive and rebound

steadily as the cool summer breeze

nature’s emotion

expressed by colors

just as people by their auras

summer rain brings a soothing change

gradually

tones down the scorching heat

‘til we see

dancing sunset colored leaves

AUTHENTIC NEW JERSEY

The boardwalk creaks underfoot,
as I pass by a shuttered restaurant
whose peeling paint still advertises “fresh seafood.”

The ocean smells of salt and taffy.
and the souvenir shop still hawks New Jersey fare
to the occasional tourist.

The lights mostly work
so human moths are attracted to the brightness after dark:
gangs of teenage boys, deprived of vandalism
because everything’s wrecked already,
laughing, lip-sticked girls, checking out the hot guys
drawing bravado from the group.

I settle for an “authentic” hot-dog,
walk the narrow beach for aways,
listen to dark ocean’s repetition.

The dog’s overcooked and the bun is stale.
It lives up to its billing.

STONE FENCE

For years,
the old stone fence
has defended itself
against the free-flow
of weeds.
It has held up
through snow and tornado
rain and harsh sun.

Civilization built the fence,
moved on
and, since then,
it has fended for itself
in ways that
the old house, the barn,
and the tilled fields could not.

And when the surrounds
succumbed to how life was
before farmers,
it toughened up as best it could,
a mute monument
to the men and women
who once harvested this land.

It’s a shrine these days
but it sees itself as a pledge.

The Poetry of Judette Robbins-Clacema

Literary Revelations presents the poetry of Judette Robbins-Clacema. We hope you enjoy it.

BIO

Judette Robbins-Clacema started writing poetry and short stories at a very young age. She published her first poem when she was eighteen. Her poems are about sadness, madness, and happiness. She loves to read a good fiction novel. Reading takes her to a world she can create in her head and live there for a little while.  For her, writing poetry is therapeutic and calming. She says poetry is subjective; she can write without being judged or criticized.

Scattered Thoughts

I’m aloof
I’m a loner
I check out
I’m irritable
I avoid people
I’m paranoid
I can’t focus
I hate surprises
They judge me
I lock myself in
I’m always afraid
I don’t go outside
I don’t have friends
I’m losing my mind
I’m always anxious
They talk about me
I’m misunderstood
I can’t stop thinking
I overreact to things
I’m always on edge
I don’t go anywhere
They think I’m weird
I don’t know what to do
I worry about everything
I’m afraid of everything
I see things others don’t
I hear things others can’t
I keep the lights on at night
I don’t talk to my neighbors
I don’t initiate conversations
I startle at the slightest sound
I expect bad things to happen
I anticipate bad things to happen

His Last Goodbye

Who will come
To pay their respects?
His father abandoned him
His mother abused him
His grandmother did her best
His neighbors avoided him
His friends…non existent
His kids tolerated him
His wife didn’t
Love him enough
He wants to go
To the other side
There is nothing left
For him to do
He knows many ways
To ease the pain
You beckon him
You tease him
You tempt him
You tell him
He will be whole
You tell him
He will be pain-free
He surrenders to you
He cannot resist you
He finally closes his eyes
Never to be opened again
He is finally pain-free

Virginia Mateias

MONA

En été, je rêve en couleurs
mon corps glisse à travers
les arcs-en-ciel
et le clair de lune pulse
au rythme d’un poème où
l’amour
est impersonnel et donc éternel…

Parfois, tu me parles
de tes rêves en noir et blanc
Et je ne dis rien.
Comprends-tu maintenant

A poem dedicated to Hikari who created a splendid painting for me

My dear followers,

I am thrilled that our fabulous Japanese painter Hikari dedicated to me a wonderful painting; the painting you see as the feature of the post and also below.

After she finished painting Hikari wrote:

“To my Dearest.
I support you who are proud as you fight against injustice”
I drew it with the image of two Japanese heroes in mind, Yoshitsune (1159-1189) and Benkei (?-1189).
The two fought together […] until their death.

My dearest Hikari,

I am deeply humbled and honored by your dedication. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I hope many people will join the fight against injustice. Thank you for being you. Thank you for this marvelous painting.

To Hikari – with love from Gabriela

The star becomes the blade that knows the atomicity of life
Molecules that bind forever
And the eternal sea where enemies leave trails of tears and of blood
I seek the road to skies born from the legendary peach
And from a drop of malleable white.

Come, stay with me forever inside horizons where once moons and children played
Fight and love with me under the sacred branches of an old sakaki
The darkened sea has stopped somewhere into my heart
And in the sheets of water and of salt,
Injustice, we will strangulate you with our bare hands
And naked we will show you to the night.

Hikari travelled and took some pictures. I am glad to share two of them with you. I hope you enjoy them.

Thank you everyone and have a pleasant rest of the week.
Gabriela
